PARC was set up by Xerox in 1970 to conduct research to come up with innovations that would significantly influence the future of technology.

He remained with Xerox till his retirement in 1986. Pake was believed to be the person responsible for having PARC located at Palo Alto, over 3000 miles from the Xerox headquarters at Rochester, N.Y. The company initially considered a number of locations, most of them located near leading universities and research centers, before finally settling on Palo Alto, in the region that would later come to be known as Silicon Valley.

It was a conscious decision on Pake's part to situate the new research center away from Xerox's corporate headquarters and existing research laboratory...
